Spring Cleaning 101

Did you grow up with a mom who was big on Spring Cleaning? Yeah, me too. It seems like old-fashioned spring cleaning has gone out of vogue. That’s a shame. After a long winter (and this one certainly fits that description), it’s nice to throw open the windows and really give your home a thorough decluttering and polishing.

Of course At Your Service can help you out. We’ll be happy to work alongside you, or on our own while you’re out doing something fun. We can work from a list you provide or one we work up together. We’re great at special projects or top to bottom cleaning. Just let us know what works best for you. Call us at 314.994.1382 or email us.

If you’re doing your own spring cleaning, here are some tips:

Strip every bed of sheets, blankets, bedspreads, duvets, comforters, and pillows. Divide them into washing and dry cleaning piles. We suggest you take the washables to a laundromat and use their giant size machines. You’ll save a lot of time. Don’t forget your pillows. Vacuum your mattresses, then replace your linens. Mmmm. Smells fresher already, right?

When you’re dusting and vacuuming, work from top to bottom and back to front. Start on the top floor of your home in the farthest room, and work forward. Be sure to get the cobwebs in the corners of the ceilings, the ceiling fans and the baseboards.

It’s a good idea to wash and/or dry clean your window treatments. For those that are permanently installed, lightly vacuum them.

Move as much of your furniture as possible to give all your floors a clean sweep. Now’s the time to call in a professional carpet and upholstery cleaner. Look online, in the newspaper, or your mailbox for discount coupons.

Thoroughly clean all your appliances inside and out. Don’t forget the toaster.

When you’re swapping your winter clothes for your warm weather clothes, fill a box with charitable donations. It’s true that one person’s giveaway is another person’s treasure. In fact, as you’re decluttering be ruthless about unloading some of the “stuff” you’ve been holding onto. If it’s not functional and/or you don’t love it, it’s time to get rid of it.

When you’re all finished we guarantee you’ll feel lighter and fresher yourself. In fact, this article in Psychology Today says spring cleaning will give you an emotional boost!

Check it out for yourself and let us know if it works for you.

Happy Spring!
